Saturday night's alright for fighting, but in our case, this Saturday night was filled with crying as we attempted to make the move to having Jack sleep through the night in his crib.
Prior to this, we usually would rock/cuddle him to sleep and then put him in his crib. When he would wake up later in the night, we would always go in and try and calm him back to sleep, but when that didn't work, we often took him into bed with us and had him fall asleep between us. It always did the trick - in less than two minutes, he was often out cold.
While we enjoyed getting to bond with him in this way, we knew that this was likely only going to cause him problems down the road if he ever needed to be away from us for the night. And we knew that he needed to be able to fall asleep by himself at some point.
So at around 10:15 p.m., shortly after his last bottle though while he was still awake, we placed him in his crib. To help him a little bit, we created a lullaby loop that plays on my iPod so that if he would wake up later he'd have something that could calm him (lots from Shawn Colvin's lullaby album; I even used to fall asleep to that CD when I lived in Royal Oak and couldn't sleep).
But he likely didn't notice the music since he cried very loudly for a good 45 minutes before he finally wore himself (and his parents) out. When he started crying, we went in and consoled him after two minutes, then after four, then six, then eight and finally 10. It was really hard not to go in and pick him up especially when he was doing the kind of cries where his whole body just shakes. But we know this will help him and will likely help him take better naps in the afternoon too. Let's just hope the rest of the night goes without too many interruptions.

Truly the most heartbreaking moment of parenting moment so far. I'm not sure what was worse: how hard he clung to our hands when we went in to give him a comforting pat, or how loud his sobs were when he realized we weren't going to pick him up like we always have before.
You will thank yourselves in the long run :) It is SO hard to do, but so nice in the end. I still have great memories of Brian and I having some nice time together after the boys went to bed each night. It was time to be "Brian and Jen" again instead of just mom and dad - not that we didn't like mom and dad, it was just nice to be "us" again :) We are so thankful, even now that they are 6 and 7, that we established a bedtime routine with them. We never have arguments with them about going to bed! :) We, of course, have other arguments, but at least that is not one of them. Night time is always a nice time :)
