Benjamin Miles decided he wanted to arrive in time for Christmas and came into the world (with a little help) at 5:58 a.m. Dec. 24. It all started around 1:30 a.m. when Christine began feeling some pain in her lower back. She thought at first it might be indigestion, but as the pain became more regular and intense, we realized this could be labor. Jack woke up around 3:30 and couldn't quite figure out what was going on. Luckily, Grandma and Grandpa Hill arrived by 4 a.m and we made a dash to the hospital. I may or may not have run several red lights to get to Sparrow and luckily there was a wheelchair close at hand so I could wheel Christine to the triage area in labor and delivery.
Shortly after we got there, we discovered that Christine was dilated to 7 to 8 centimeters and the nurse could feel "little parts." So clearly he had not flipped as we had hoped. Two contractions later and Christine's water broke. Things moved quickly from there - the contractions continued to get even more intense and by 5:30 or so she was in the operating room and being prepped for delivery. After they made the incision, however, he didn't seem to want to come out as he was holding onto Christine's ribs trying to stay inside. Finally, he let go and was born. He is definitely a chunky monkey - 7 lbs., 12 oz. and 19 inches. He's breastfeeding well and so far seems like a very content baby.
Thank God for pain medication - given the external version on Wednesday and the C-section today, Christine says the pain isn't too bad, though she's still battling occasional bouts of nausea as a result of it. Hopefully she'll get to rest some in the coming days before heading home.
I'm doing great - just happy to have a healthy baby and a healthy wife. And Jack will be meeting his new baby brother later today. We hope to have pictures up soon - we would've had some sooner, but forgot to bring our camera cord with us. I guess you'll just have to check in later.
